Equifax Breach - What Can Consumers Do?

Consider Placing a Fraud Alert or Credit Freeze on Your Consumer Credit Report

  • Fraud Alert

With a fraud alert, if you (or someone who may be trying to use your identity) apply for credit with a business, the business must try to verify your identity before extending credit. This usually means calling you, using a number you provided when you established the alert, to verify you are at the business attempting to take out the new credit in question.

There is no charge to place a fraud alert and will expire after 90 days. If you want it to remain after 90 days, it is your responsibility to renew it before expiration.

You may place a fraud alert by contacting any one of the credit reporting agencies, either by phone or online. The one you contact is required to notify the other two.

Confirmed victims of identity theft are entitled to an extended fraud alert which lasts seven years. To apply for this type of alert you will need to mail or upload your Identity Theft Report which you can create at IdentityTheft.gov.

  • Credit Freeze

With a credit freeze, no one, including you, can access your credit report to open new credit accounts. You will get a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to use each time you want to freeze or unfreeze your account to apply for new credit.

Based on state law, a credit freeze may include a fee from $5 to $10 each time you freeze or unfreeze your account with each credit reporting agency. They last until you temporarily lift or permanently remove it, but may expire after seven years in some states.

To place a credit freeze you must contact each of the three credit reporting agencies separately at their credit freeze portals.

Confirmed victims of identity theft may not be charged a fee in most states.
